Concrete Coatings & Restoration
The importance of utilizing concrete joint fillers in concrete floors cannot be understated. Joints common to resinous flooring include expansion joints, construction joints and control joints. They help maintain the structural integrity of concrete slabs in commercial and industrial facilities. As many builders and facility managers understand, correct installation of semi-rigid, polyurea and epoxy joint fillers can help safeguard the function and appearance of concrete slab and resinous flooring investments. Careful selection of concrete floor joint products can help enable essential building elements to perform as designed throughout their long usable lives, allowing them to fulfill their promise of exceptional life cycle value.
Why Filling Control Joints In Concrete Slabs Matters.
Control or “contraction” joints, as they are sometimes referred to, are intended to help stave off concrete flooring and walls from suffering fractures and cracks. As veteran commercial and industrial contractors are aware, these slabs are still subject to shrinkage and require short- and long-term attention.
These strategically planned control joints account for the natural potential of concrete to retract and put spacing in place. Instead of dealing with random cracks, contractors and property owners are tasked with gap maintenance. The first 90 days after a pour is mission critical, because that’s when the majority of a slab’s shrinkage will occur. There will also be long-term retraction that will need to be addressed.
Control joints are either pre-planned with thin, removable materials placed into the pour or cut into the concrete after it has set. Though not uncommon for project plans to omit the filling and sealing of these planned stress relievers, this is not recommended in many facilities, where monolithic, seamless surfaces are required for best sanitation, isolation of chemicals for cleanup and the like.
Advancements in Joint Fillers.
The highly flexible joint fillers used for various types of outdoor concrete have been around for decades and are used for interior concrete floors as well. However, they are best suited for lighter duty indoors, as they do not hold up under heavy wheeled traffic. While high flexibility joint fillers are ideal for exterior concrete, they are unable to transfer load or downward pressure. The development of semi-rigid joint fillers provided the answer.
In heavy traffic interior environments, control joints are subjected to ongoing stress in the form of forklift loads, laden carts and the like. When the joints are not properly filled, the edges can become a traffic hindrance and safety hazard, and eventually get spalled, chipped and cracked, further impairing pedestrian and wheeled traffic flow, which then creates additional damage and so on. It’s a cycle that can result in the entire concrete slab having to be replaced well before its time.
With the advanced semi-rigid joint fillers by Tennant Coatings, installed by one of our certified contractors, interior control joints get the support they need to withstand heavy industrial, commercial and institutional traffic. Our resilient fillers bond well to each wall of the joint, helping prevent moisture, spilled chemicals, dirt and grit from entering the gap. The innovative semi-rigid materials are able to expand and contract along with the joint, properly bridge the gap to enable smooth progression of heavy traffic, yet simultaneously protect the joint edges from damage.
